The project is a street performance blending the traditional style of drum-roll majorettes with contemporary social commentary. Featuring women marching, chanting, and baton twirling, it serves as playground for thinking about modern issues like control, conformity, resistance, and group dynamics, highlighting the irony of hyper-feminine performances rooted in militaristic drills. Produced by the Wonton Girls, known for using popular stage forms (cabaret, burlesque, sketch comedy) to challenge gender norms, consumer culture and other relevant topics, the piece combines synchronized choreography with dance moves taken from from popping, locking, waacking, vogueing, charleston and other, including elements of physical theatre, clowning and other stage disciplines. Performers will resemble a mix of soldiers, security guards, cheerleaders, and protestors, incorporating robotic, non-human qualities. Some movement will be inspired by North Korea’s Pyonyang traffic ladies. The soundtrack will include commands and whistles, chants like “Naša četica koraka”, and potentially live drum music.
